THE CRY OF THE PROPHET - A Call to Fullness of Life.
by Joan Chittister OSB
Benetvision, Erie, Pennsylvania. 2009
(paperback. 68 pages)
This is an interesting title by Joan Chittister OSB who has proven herself to be a prophet in our times.
In this short, poetic and creatively presented book Joan portrays a way of speaking, criticising (that which is unjust) and of getting into the hearts of Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, Micah, Ezekiel and Jesus.
As an experienced religious woman, committed to educative practices, Joan leaves the reader with gems of wisdom, not for their own sake, but for us to ponder and apply.
She challenges the reader with lines such as: “Prophecy is unrequited love gone mad with hope.”
This is a book which may be picked up randomly for a time of reflection and inspiration.
Joan writes a little about the prophet in his time and quickly moves us on from the historic to face where the prophet’s focus is needed in 2009. She asks: “And now and here what would an Amos see?”
Through Hosea, Joan develops the theme that there is a major difference between a critic (unloving) and a prophet. She says: “Hosea’s message to a domesticated church is a potent but a missing one, even in our own life times.”
With photos, poetry and poem meditations and echoes from women prophets such as Julian of Norwich, Clare of Assisi, Florence Nightingale we are moved towards Jesus, The Prophetic reign of God and to His Resurrection: “It is Easter Sunday that brings us the greatest prophetic message of (them) all.”
A beautiful book, with discussion questions following each chapter, it is easily accessible for every one.
I would recommend it to teachers of senior students, to staff groups and to any person intent on living fully her or his Baptismal call and commitment.
