Sister Mary Elizabeth Mulcahy was born at Fitzroy, Melbourne, on August 24, 1905, the fourth child in a family of eight children.
Her parents were Timothy and Elizabeth Mulcahy nee Brown, both of Irish birth. Elizabeth was educated by the good Samaritan Sisters at St Brigids School, North Fitzroy.
After leaving school, Elizabeth worked as a dress maker until she entered the Good Samaritan Novitiate at Pennant Hills on July 1 1929, at the age of twenty four and became Sister Elizabeth.
After her first profession on January 9 1932 she continued her studies to qualify for Victorian teacher registration.
Her appointments were as follows:
1933 the Kindergarten in St Brigids School, Marrickville.
May 1934 Victoria (16years)- at Epping, Koroit and East Preston.
1951 New South Wales - Canberra at Braddon and Narrabundah
1958 Dundas near Pennant Hills.
1963 to 1965 she was superior at Broadway, Chippendale.
1966 to 1984 - teacher at St John Evangelists Cambelltown, West Wollongong, East Reservoir and Korumburra.
In 1985 she retired from teaching but helped occasionally in St Josephs School and loved visiting sick and lonely people in the Korumburra parish, whatever their religious belief. She was always smiling and cheerful, ready for a friendly chat and a joke.
She remained a staunch supporter of Fitzroy football club.
In 1988 she spent some time in Reservoir before taking up residence at Marian House in 1989. Although her eyesight had deteriorated greatly, Sr Elizabeth still loved meeting and talking to people In her last illness she went to Caritas Christi Home at Kew.
While waiting for a bed at Bundoora. She died on March 24 1999, aged 93 years and in the seventieth year of her religious life.
