Santa Maria College celebrates 120 years of excellence

Founded by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan in 1904, this year Santa Maria College in Northcote, Victoria proudly marks a significant milestone – 120 years of empowering and educating young women.

Over the past century, the College has remained steadfast in its commitment to providing a progressive, inclusive and nurturing environment that celebrates the unique strengths and potential of every student.

The theme ‘Kindness Transforms Community’ is a powerful reflection of the values that have shaped the College throughout its history. Kindness is more than just a word; it is a guiding principle that informs every aspect of the school community. It is integral to the history of the College and continues to drive its vision for the future.

By cultivating kindness, a ripple effect is created that extends far beyond the College walls, transforming the school community and the world at large. The ‘Santa Spirit’ is a sense of Justice, Belonging and Community that is woven into the fabric of the College.

The legacy of the College as a leader in girls’ education is testament to a progressive approach, which has always prioritised the development of compassionate, confident and capable women.

The 120th anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the countless number of students who have walked the College halls, each contributing to the rich tapestry of its history with their talents, aspirations and acts of kindness.

One of the most significant events in the 120th anniversary celebrations was the recent opening and blessing of the newly refurbished chapel. This sacred space has been a cornerstone of spiritual life at Santa Maria College for generations, providing a place of reflection, prayer and connection.

The chapel’s refurbishment is not only a restoration of its physical beauty but also a renewal of commitment to the spiritual growth and wellbeing of students and staff.

Special guests included the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, whose vision and legacy have been the foundation for the next step in the journey. Principal celebrant for the liturgy was Bishop Terry Curtin, Auxiliary Bishop of the Northern Region in the Archdiocese of Melbourne, with Father Antony Shabin Kaniampuram Raphael IVDei, Parish Priest of the parishes of Northcote and Thornbury.
