The Sisters of the Good Samaritan Foundation has launched an urgent emergency appeal following the destruction caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi (locally known as Typhoon Tino), which has severely impacted communities on the island of Negros in the Philippines.
While media coverage has focused largely on the impact in Cebu, the neighbouring island of Negros – where long-standing Good Samaritan ministries are located – has also suffered extensive damage.
Many scholarship students, staff and families supported through the Foundation’s nutrition program live in the coastal squatter settlement of Boulevard where homes have been destroyed and large sections of the community have been washed away. Families are displaced and many are now seeking makeshift shelter, with limited access to food, clean water and essential supplies.
Inland communities have also been affected, including the Sisters of the Good Samaritan Kinder School, where families are facing significant disruption.
The Executive Director of the Good Sams Foundation, Sonya Mears, said the Emergency Relief Appeal would provide support to the community, including shelter materials, meals and assistance to rebuild homes. “Your contribution, will help families already living with vulnerability rebuild their communities. Together we can offer our compassion and practical support,” she said.
