Registration is open for the Good Oil Writers’ Workshop

A workshop that aims to support and encourage the development of both emerging and published writers will take place in Sydney on 29 May 2024. The Good Oil Writers’ Workshop, Words Matter – engaging with our Readers, nourishing the Spirit and building Community, is an initiative of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan in partnership with Garratt Publishing

The Good Oil is a ministry of the Good Samaritan Sisters. Its editorial mission is to nourish your spirit, stimulate your thinking, encourage reflection and dialogue, and promote social justice. The purpose of the workshop is to encourage creative discovery and inspiration, and to help writers to hone their skills. 

The workshop will be facilitated by well-known author Michael McGirr. The presenters are author and educator Ann Rennie and ABC Producer Noel Debien from the Religion and Ethics Unit.

Michael McGirr is an Australian author whose books include Bypass: the story of a road, Ideas that Saved my LifeFinding God’s Traces and the forthcoming Every Day is New, a Book for Ordinary Time. He has been the chair of judges of the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards and the National Biography Award. His stories, essays and opinion pieces have appeared in numerous places both in Australia and overseas. Michael is Manager of Community Engagement with Caritas Australia.

Ann Rennie is a Melbourne writer and teacher. She believes in good news and the Good News. She writes for connection and community and loves the soul joy of finding the right word at the right time. Ann contributes to various media outlets and writes a monthly column for her local parish cluster. Her latest adventure is a fortnightly radio show on Radio Maria, a Catholic digital radio station based in Melbourne.

Noel Debien came to the ABC’s Religion Unit in 1996 and has worked across a range of programs including The Drum, Hymns of Glory, Compass, People Dimensions, Life Matters, The Religion & Ethics Report, and Sunday Nights. He is now back at Compass after a long and engaging diversion into those many other TV, radio and online programs.

Where: The Sisters of the Good Samaritan Congregational Centre, 2 Avenue Road, Glebe, Sydney.
